Michael McCarthy, Executive Director

Michael McCarthy joined the Ohio Military/Veterans Legal Assistance Project in 2016. Mike serves as the organization’s Executive Director and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Project’s operations.


Mike is a Columbus native and a graduate of St. Charles Preparatory School, the University of Dayton, and the Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He is the managing member of a small law firm based in Columbus.


While not running OMVLAP or practicing law, Mike is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve and currently serves as the Commanding Officer of 3d Battalion, 25th Marines headquartered in Brook Park, Ohio. He has more than 20 years of active and reserve service, primarily in infantry and anti-terrorism units.

Michelle Tussing

Michelle Tussing, Director, Pro Bono Center

Michelle Tussing is the Director of the Pro Bono Center with Operation Legal Help Ohio. She received her bachelor of arts, magna cum laude, from Lourdes University in 2008 and graduated cum laude from the University of Toledo College of Law in 2013, where she was actively involved in public interest work and a member of Law Review. She was the Vice President and then President of the Public Interest Law Association, and she was awarded College of Law Outstanding Service Award, Pro Bono Outstanding Volunteer Award, and the first Public Interest Volunteer Award by the Toledo Bar Association. Michelle worked through law school and beyond at the public defender’s office handling felony cases. She also brings several years experience of working with the Toledo Bar Association Pro Bono Legal Services Program working with a variety of civil legal issues for low income clients. In addition, she has experience working with a small Social Security law firm and a emergency family homeless shelter in Toledo.


Michelle is a member of the Toledo Bar Association, Columbus Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the National Association of Pro Bono Professionals. Along with actively participating in committees through the bar associations, she is also on the Ohio AG Task Force on Criminal Justice and Mental Illness.
